Chino Moya, Undergods, 2021
Feature film

<<Throughout, we watch bourgeois family units descending into some kind of
feral hell, their disparate stories tumbling into each other in disorienting fashion.
Crucially, each of these descents is triggered by a crisis within – or breakdown of –
a central white male character (no wonder a drunken rendition of My Way looms large),
suggesting that what we are witnessing is not merely the unravelling of “civilisation”,
but of the patriarchy that created it.>> Mark Kermode, The Guardian.
<<Spanish writer-director Chino Moya’s dystopian fable keeps the viewer in a state of uneasy puzzlement. (…) Moya has made something rare: an oddity that feels both familiar and completely sui generis.>>The New York Times
<<A visionary dystopian anthology (…) A riptide of surrealism runs through Chino Moya’s ambitious debut feature, a fantasy suite of tales that don’t so much interlock as butt into one another and blurt out alarming, dreamlike correspondences. (…) Pulsing, 1980s-inflected synth sounds mingle with a paranoid sound design, capturing the future-retro vibes of a Kafkaesque world that seems, at times, uncomfortably close to home.>>The Guardian

Chino Moya, Undergods, 2021
Production stills

<<Chino Moya’s Striking Vision of an Upside-Down Future. (…) This visionary debut combines elements of other dystopian classics into a parable about a power shift that leaves modern man in the cold. Moya’s vision may be bleak — and “vision” is the right word to describe the Spanish-born director’s stunning capacity to create images and atmosphere — but there’s something unnervingly familiar about the world he creates in his feature debut.>>Variety
<<Director Chino Moya’s exceptional debut film Undergods (…) offering a prophetic warning that we will be the instruments of our own undoing if we refuse to address rising authoritarianism alongside growing inequality and scarcity of resources. (…) Undergods is a dystopian fairy tale perfectly suited for the pandemic era.>>Forbes
<<This arresting first feature blends sci-fi and fantasy to create a worldview which is at once savagely grotesque and alarmingly familiar. There’s barely a frame of the film which wouldn’t stand on its own.>>Screendaily
